I agree with you about the 3D CAD tools.   I've been using VariCAD, which is relatively inexpensive, runs on Linux and imports STEP and IGES, but there's no way it will open proprietary formats.    Is there some reason the OpenMoko folks (or someone else) can't save the files out as IGES?</description>
